Hands-on film workshops in Beacon

Beacon Creative Industries is listing four hands-on workshops in Beacon from late August through October, covering 16mm cinematography, black-and-white film processing, acting for the camera, and makeup for film and video. Each workshop is listed at $199.

Four classes, four production disciplines

The schedule moves from camera operation and film exposure to the work that happens in front of the lens and in the makeup chair. The workshops are aimed at a mix of filmmakers, actors and people building practical on-set skills.

16mm Workshop with the ARRI 416 — Starts Aug. 22; hands-on instruction with Steven Turco and Lucas Millard.
Hand Processed 16MM Film — Starts Sept. 12; taught by Lucas Millard, with an evening screening scheduled for Sept. 13.
Acting for the Camera — Starts Oct. 3; directing with Rebecca Arndt.
Mastering Make-Up for Film and Video — Starts Oct. 25; with Jenny Magliano.

The ARRI 416 workshop leads the schedule

The two-day ARRI 416 workshop focuses on building the camera, loading magazines and operating the system. Students will work with two film stocks, discuss exposure and lens choices, and take turns shooting after the scene is lit. The workshop plans to shoot 800 feet of film; development, scanning and a digital scan for each student are included in the $199 fee.

The class is capped at 10 participants. Steven Turco and Lucas Millard are listed as instructors.

A same-day shoot-and-process class

The Hand Processed 16MM Film workshop takes a different route through the medium. Students will shoot and process a roll of black-and-white film using five-gallon jugs and other readily available materials. The schedule lists Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by an evening screening on Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. Rain dates are listed for Sept. 19–20.

The class is limited to five students. Lucas Millard, an award-winning filmmaker, cinematographer and colorist, is listed as the instructor.

Classes for people in front of and behind the camera

The Acting for the Camera workshop is a two-day seminar for actors and filmmakers. Its exercises cover blocking, the 180-degree rule, eyelines, marks, shot-listing and building a scene with professional camera equipment. Rebecca Arndt is listed as the instructor; the page identifies her as a Local 600 camera operator and member of the Society of Camera Operators.

On Oct. 25, Mastering Make-Up for Film and Video will cover product selection for high-definition images, lighting setups, continuity and the practical expectations of working on set. The page says the class is designed for all skill levels and lists Jenny Magliano as the instructor.

Registration and location

The workshops take place at Beacon Creative Industries, 20 West Main Street, Suite 4, in Beacon. The BCI workshops page carries the current schedule and links to each class’s booking page. At the time of this report, the three workshops after the ARRI class displayed available spots online.

BCI’s booking policy says the facility hosts workshops operated by independent providers. Participants should review the cancellation and rescheduling terms on the individual booking page before paying.
